"I like to establish a connection from beginning to end with the audience, through improvised words"

Madalena Botelho

How did your passion for music begin?
I grew up in a house where good music was always played. At the age of 6, my parents gave me an organ. I was also inspired by Disney songs. Three years ago, I decided to take the risk because I felt I wasn't dedicating enough time to my passion, and I didn't want to regret never trying music.

Why did you choose Jazz?
The choice of Jazz was based solely on my passion. Jazz, Soul, and Blues are the styles I enjoy singing and listening to the most. My musical style is geared towards an elite audience.

What are the challenges of performing Jazz in Portugal?
The lack of exposure because people aren't used to hearing Jazz, and the distribution of resources is not adequate.

And the benefits?
Working with great musicians and extraordinary people.

What message do you want to convey?
Most of the songs I choose are from the 1930s and 1940s and are about love in its various forms. Whether it's love between a couple or the friendship one person shares with another.

How is your relationship with the audience?
My concerts have an intimate character due to the style of music. I like to establish a connection from beginning to end with the audience, through improvised words. The audience responds very well, but I don't usually focus on the applause.

Where do you usually perform?
Opened to the public, in Cascais, I enjoyed performing at the Oitavos Hotel, the Farol Design Hotel, and in Lisbon, I also appreciate the Jardim das Amoreiras. Although I've performed in Copenhagen, I have a desire to explore more places abroad. The venues I perform at are mostly private.

Do you have any rituals?
I don't have any particular rituals, but before a concert, it's essential to have time to relax.
